If the Canon EOS 1Ds is the king of Canon DSLR’s, the Canon EOS 60D is certainly the crown prince. The Canon 60D review vs the 7D, announced just a year earlier, demonstrates the new innovations of last year. In 2010 an array of DSLR Camera technology such as the HD movie capability matured to professional video/movie level.
The Canon 60D also launched Canon’s vari-angle screen, a feature that I am sure we will see more of in 2011 like in the Canon 600d and the Nikon D5100 released early in 2011.
For a list of the key features compared to the rest of comparable Canon’s, click on the Canon DSLR Features chart on the right to enlarge it.
- 18 MP APS-C sensor
- Professional level rugged aluminium alloy, polycarbonate and glass fibre construction.
- Canon managed to keep the weight well under 800 grams.
- The lighting fast 1/8000 sec shutter speed is as fast as the Pro DSLR’s
- ISO range from 100 to 12800.
- Vari-angle 1040KB, 3″ LCD with 3:2 aspect ratio matching the sensor. (at last!)
- The best in class HD Movie features fully capable of professional film production.
- Outstanding ergonomics, including the second monitor on top of the camera.
- Impressive 5 FPS continuous shooting, up to 58 Jpeg and 16 Raw shots.
- A Competitive Price of under $1000 in most on-line stores.
It is hard to criticise the Canon 60D, but the following should be noted:
- While the vari-angle screen is very useful for unusual position shooting, one needs to open it to view. This takes away some of the convenience of the always viewable fixed LCD. There clearly is scope for two more LCD panels in this configuration.
- The APS-C sensor size is a subject of intense debate and some pedantic professionals will still pay the 2 to 4 times premium for the Full-Frame EOS 1 models.
- Compared to the pro models there is no claim of ‘extensive weather sealing’, so it is not quite up to rough and tumble use of action junkies.
Canon EOS 60D vs 7D, T3i, T2i and T1i
Canon 60D vs 7D
The key differences between the Canon EOS 60d and the Canon EOS 7D are (winning features in bold):
- Processor – 60D:DIGIC IV, 7D: DUAL DIGIC IV
- Autofocus points - 60D: 9, 7D: 19
- LCD Pixels – 60D:104K, 7D:920K
- FPS – 60D:5.3, 7D:8fps. (126 JPEG (with UDMA card), 15 RAW)
- Storage- 60D :SD , SDHC or SDXC, 7D:Compact Flash
- Price – 60D: +/- $999, 7D: +/- $1500
The Canon 7D vs 60D comparison shows a huge jump in price. Do the difference in features justify the difference?
Canon 60D vs Canon Rebel T3i(600D)
- Body construction – 60D:Alum. alloy, polycarb. and fibre. T3i S/Steel polycarb. and fibre.
- Shutter speed - 60D: 1/8000, T3i: 1/4000
- Weight: - 60D: 750gm, T3i: 570gm
- FPS – 60D:5.3, - T3i:3.7
- Price – 60D:+/- $999, T3i +/- $800
My personal opinion: Between the Canon T3i(600D) vs the 60D, the Canon 60D is a clear winner given the small price difference.
Canon 60D vs Canon Rebel T2i (550D)
- Body construction - 60D:Alum. alloy, polycarb. and fibre. T2i: S/Steel & hard plastic.
- Shutter speed - 60D: 1/8000, T2i: 1/4000
- LCD – 60D:Vari-Angle, T2i:Fixed
- Weight: - 60D: 750gm, T3i: 530gm
- FPS - 60D:5.3, - T3i:3.7
- Price - 60D:+/- $999, T3i +/- $620
My personal opinion: Given the price difference between the 60D vs the Canon Rebel T2i (550d), the Canon T2i is holding its own. No surprise that both are very popular in their price brackets.
Canon 60D vs Canon Rebel T1i (500D)
- Body construction - 60D:Alum. alloy, polycarb. and fibre. T1i: S/Steel & hard plastic.
- Sensor MP: 60D:18MP, T1i:15MP
- Shutter speed - 60D: 1/8000, T2i: 1/4000
- LCD - 60D:Vari-Angle, 1040K 3:2 Aspect, T1i:Fixed, 920K
- Weight: - 60D: 750gm, T3i: 530gm
- FPS - 60D:5.3, - T2i:3.4
- Sound feature: 60D:Jack for external microphone, T1i:No external microphone feature.
- Price – 60D:+/- $999, T2i: +/- $570
My personal opinion: With such a wide difference in features and price between the Canon 60D and the T1i, the comparison is perhaps unfair. Both Cameras are well priced given the features. The Canon T1i is two years older and it shows in the slightly lessor sophistication of the movie features. Apart from that, the Canon T1i (500D) is still one of the winners in its price range.
