Canon DSLR Camera Features- Full feature list for all current Canon DSLR’s

This chart is a 17  landscape page PDF…   Too large to display in this screen.  It is best viewed as a PDF page. Just click on the link and it will pop up in a separate tab:  AllCanonFeatures.pdf

A careful study of the chart will show the trends in Canon DSLR Camera developments over that past four years.  There is much to study but I would like to point out the following:

Canon DSLR Cameras leading up to 2007:

  • The focus was on getting Mega Pixels to the 10 MP level and we paid a premium for 6 MP and above.
  • The Digic III processor was the top end.
  • The only camera still in Canon’s ‘current’ lineup released in 2007 is still the most expensive Camera in the Canon range, the impressive professional Canon EOS 1DS Mark III. Notable features include:
    • the Pros:
      • Massive, 21 MP capacity, Dual Digic III processor, 5 FPS (Frames Per Second) 1/8000 shutter speed.
      • Full Frame 35 mm Sensor, weather sealed Magnesium Alloy body (weighing 1.2Kg)
    • The Cons.  It lags behind the later cameras, including many of the consumer models in:
      • ISO at only 100-1600, the LCD at 230K, no movie features and many automations and  under the bonnet’ functions.(But maybe the true professional still photographers don’t need these, except for more ISO)

The ‘surviving’ Profession DSLR Canon released in 2008:

  • Another impressive professional DSLR full frame camera, the Canon EOS 5d Mark II, shares some of the  1DS’ muscle and adds some more of it’s own:
    • 21 MP and full frame, but ‘only’ 3.9 FPS, ISO at 100-6,400, extendable by 4x to 25,600
  • It however demonstrates the technology advances introduced in 2008:
    • The introduction of the DIGIC IV processor (one only, hence the 3.9 FPS)
    • 920 pixel LCD
    • The introduction of  HD movie functions in DSLR’s  (Basic by today’s standards)
    • More in-camera functions and automation.

The technology curve accelerated in 2009:

  • The third and latest Professional Canon EOS 1d Mark IV came out with:
    • A Dual DIGIC IV processor, an odd size sensor, at 16.1 MP but it rapid fires at 10 FPS.
    • ISO was increased to 100-12,800 expandable to 102,400!
    • We see the start of the HD Movie technology rise.
  • Probably one of the most impressive releases came with the Prosumer model Canon EOS 7D, today at less than half the price of a Pro-model, it boasts:
    • 18 MP, Dual DIGIC IV, ISO at 100-6400 (Exp>-12,800),1/8000 shutter speed like all the pro models, sophisticated HD movie, and 8 FPS.
    • The only thing that makes it a prosumer camera is the APS-C sensor with a 1.6 cropping factor like all the entry to prosumer models.

2010 Was the year of pushing the technology down into the consumer (APS-C) price range with even more impressive Movie feature releases and in-camera functions.

  • The Canon EOS 550D  and Canon 60D both came with HD feature film capability, largely improved LCD features at 1080 Pixels at last matching the 3:2 ratio of the sensor.  The 60D offered the first Canon DSLR vari-angle screen.
  • The MP curve quietly climbed making 10MP ordinary.  The 500D at 15MP obsoleted the 450D (12.2MP) and started to strangle the 1000D.
  • The in camera functions continue to grow with increased creative mode and white balance sophistication.

The beginning of 2011:

  • Movie function was brought to the lowest of the new entry level Canon EOS 1100D (12,2MP) finally shelving the very successful baby Canon EOS 1000D
  • Impressive in-camera functions like Intelligent Scene recognition and an array of JPEG size choices were introduced in both new models announced in February, the 1100D mentioned and the Exciting Canon EOS 600D, with 18 MP and a vari-angle  1080, 3:2 LCD at a starting recommended price of only $800.
