The Nikon D5000 series has long been a good choice for photographers who wanted a very capable compact DSLR that offer a higher level of enthusiast features than the D3000 series that sits below it. Nikon’s latest model – the D5500 – continues that trend, though the differences between it and the Nikon D5300 that came before it aren’t enormous. The D5300, introduced in the fall of 2013, impressed us with its image quality, flip-out LCD, and feature set. We were less enthused about its menu system and live view performance.

The Galaxy S10 Plus is one of the best phones money can buy, with fast performance, an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, improved cameras and extra-long battery life.

The camera market is constantly changing, with new and exciting cameras being launched all of the time. Luckily for those who like to travel, there are plenty of camera bodies that are perfectly designed for long days on your feet with plenty of exciting memories to capture.

One of the cameras we’re most excited by is the recently announced Panasonic Lumix G100. With a 20.3MP MOS MFT sensor, the ability to shoot 4K video, and a respectable £589 price tag for the body only (US price yet to be announced), the G100 looks to be a fantastic vlogging and travel camera.

We’ve also been interested in one of Canon’s latest offerings, the Canon EOS R5. This tiny, yet powerful digital camera has a clip-on viewfinder and a front-facing 180-degree screen. This means that this digital camera is particularly useful for vlogging and taking selfies in front of impressive scenes.

The brand new Fujifilm X-T200 has also made waves in the camera market with the biggest vari-angle touchscreen that we’ve seen, measuring 3.5 inches across the diagonal and with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The X-T200 is another compact and stylish camera that’s perfect for shooting video when you’re out exploring your dream destination.

Meanwhile, the new version of the Olympus PEN mirrorless cameras was launched earlier this year. The Olympus PEN E-PL 10 has some stylish touches that make it ideal for travel, street, vlogging and blogging cameras under $300, including its in-body image stabilization and a 180º flipping display.

However, just because these are the newest cameras around, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re right for you. The perfect travel digital camera will be versatile plenty of to deal with lots of different situations, depending on where you’ve journeyed to. You might go from wanting to capture the entirety of a large building to attempting to photograph a rare bird flitting through the air. These two situations usually require vastly different kit, but a good travel camera will help you catch them both with minimal extra pieces of equipment.

If you know what you like shooting and want something a little more specialized, then you might want to look at our best DSLRs and best mirrorless cameras guides. These could have larger sensors for better image quality, and you’ll be able to swap out lenses for various situations and subjects.

Meanwhile, if carrying around several lenses on holiday sounds like a nightmare, you then should have a look at one of the best small cameras rather. These will support a fixed lens that may retract into the camera when it’s not being used, which means it’s perfect for carrying around in a pocket. If you like capturing details in the distance, there are some fantastic long-zoom compact digital cameras that you might want to take a look at.

Some of the best camera for beginners also make the best vacation camera, so these are worth a look if you’re a newbie. We also have an article suggesting the best cameras for kids. And whatever camera you pick, for ideas on transporting and transporting them around, see our guide to the very best camera bags and cases for some ideas here.

Important Travel Camera Features

We’ll get to the juicy stuff in a second (I promise!), but first, it’s important to understand what makes a camera good for travel.

When picking a travel digital camera, you must define what your needs are.

Are you looking for lightweight portability? Something weatherproof? Professional image high quality? Reasonably priced? A well-rounded model for landscapes, portraits, but can also handle vlogging?

Here are some key camera features you should be aware of moving forward.

Gone are the days when a bigger camera means a better camera. If you want to travel with your camera, you’ll want something small & lightweight. Luckily technology has improved a lot.

Professional photographers would like the opportunity to manually control all digital camera settings to dial in the perfect shot in different situations. Pick a travel camera with full manual control if you want to improve your skills.

Many people assume that more megapixels is better. This isn’t always true if the pixels themselves are usually small. However, more megapixels on a big sensor will give you higher detail, and allow you to “crop” your picture without reducing quality.

Lens aperture will be measured in f/numbers, like f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4, etc. The lower the number, the better it will perform in low-light situations (and more expensive). Lower numbers also create a nice “bokeh” effect in portraits.

A zoom lens lets you get closer to the action, especially for wildlife or people. But the bigger the zoom the bulkier a digital camera gets. The amount of zoom is a personal preference. For travel, having the option to zoom in without changing lenses is nice.

Most quality take a trip digital cameras will shoot the movie in HD 1080p. Some even have 4K capabilities – which most people won’t need unless you’re doing professional work. Travel camcorders cameras that can shoot in 4K are generally more expensive.

Some cameras have their own wifi network, allowing you to upload your photos instantly to your computer or smartphone. This can be handy if you need to share travel photos to social media without a computer.

High-end mirrorless and DSLR digital cameras possess interchangeable lenses, enabling you to select the perfect lens for different situations. Smartphones and small travel cameras usually have fixed lenses.

Will your travel digital camera hold up against the elements? Some cameras are better protected from moisture and dust than others. If you plan on shooting in very dusty or wet environments, it helps to have strong weatherproofing.

Not all cameras shoot in RAW format. Camera Natural basically saves the image without any internal modifications, as opposed to JPG. It’s preferred by advanced users for even more leeway when editing their pictures with software later.

Some digital cameras or lenses offer Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). This feature compensates for “handshake” on slower shutter speeds, to help keep images sharp in low-light circumstances. Some cameras likewise have internal sensor stabilization, for even better results.
