Why would we recommend DSLR cameras for travel photography when there are more affordable mirrorless cameras out there that are powerful, compact, and lighter?

DSLR cameras are great for still digital photography when compared to mirrorless cameras due to their optical viewfinder. The optical viewfinder shows you exactly what the camera will capture. With a DSLR digital camera, you will also enjoy longer battery life, better low-light performance, full manual controls, and a wide selection of lenses. DSLR (digital single-lens reflector) digital cameras may be bulkier than their mirrorless counterparts, but that doesn’t prevent them from producing beautiful, high-quality images. DSLR cameras let you have the experience of seeing directly through the lens with the mirrored optical viewfinder and in many cases, the battery life is better.

If you need high-quality images, and don’t mind a bit more bulk and weight, then a DSLR camera is what we recommend for taking travel photos.

In this guide we have compiled the following information to help you find the Best DSLR Cameras for Travel Photography:

The EOS 6D Mark II is a major step forward from the original 6D, but more in operational speed and performance than outright image quality. It’s a terrific camera to use, but its price puts it up against a number of strong cameras. It’s a really good all-rounder, which would make a great ‘first’ full-frame DSLR.

There are no fireworks with the Nikon D780. It doesn’t bring radical new technologies, bar-raising specifications or wacky design features. It’s simply an excellent evolution of a great camera design that has something for enthusiasts and experts everywhere. Nikon has, at last, brought fast phase-detection live view AF to its DSLR style, it’s added pretty advanced 4K video features, a better continuous shooting speed and buffer capacity than we’d expect at this price, and you get Nikon’s typically comfortable, polished and balanced DSLR handling. Bravo, Nikon!

There are irritations and limitations with any camera, and we can pick out a few with the EOS 90D – but this camera’s capabilities are so impressive and so all-encompassing, that you can’t expect miracles. We’d like a bigger buffer capacity, we’d like twin card slots, we’d like lots of things – but this camera already does so much, and will it so well at an enthusiast digital camera price point, that it deserves its high rating.

The Nikon D3500 is one of our favourite DSLRs for photography students – or for anyone who is looking for a low-cost way into serious image taking. Fans might be grinding their teeth at the relatively small list of changes over the D3400 that came before it, but that’s not the point. Nikon has refreshed and rejuvenated among its classic designs to keep it fresh, responsive and appealing to first-time DSLR buyers. It looks as good today as when it was launched, and falling prices only make it more attractive still. Beginner cameras don’t have to be cutting edge – they have to be straightforward, affordable, and just plain good. And that’s what the D3500 delivers.

  • Excellent performance - up to 7.0 fps continuous shooting speed with high-performance DIGIC 6+ Image Processor for...

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV was big news when it arrived, with pretty much every element improved over the previous 5D Tag III. But that was way back in August 2016, and the world has moved on since then, so does the 5D Mark IV still have what it takes? The 30.4MP sensor is good, the noise and dynamic range are good. The DCI 4K video capture is good, although the 1.64x crop of the sensor makes it hard to get wide-angle shots. The build, handling and ergonomics are good. But this is the issue for the EOS 5D Mark IV – everything is good in a market where many cameras are outstanding.

Nikon’s choice to fall the resolution of its best APS-C DSLRs to 20 megapixels was a shock to numerous and this includes a slight effect on the D7500’s outright quality – but its acceleration, low-light functionality and overall picture quality are high quality. Initially, it appeared as if a little bit of routine range-filling on Nikon’s component, but because the marketplace has matured, costs have fallen and rivals possess transformed… and the D7500 now has few immediate competitors.

Even in the context of the newly announced D780 remains a capable – and cheaper – full-frame DSLR for enthusiasts. Its lower price is more reflective of its age than its abilities, and means it really is curiously more appealing today than it was maybe a couple of years ago.
