With the release of Sony’s Alpha A7 Mark II, the company has added a fourth full-frame mirrorless camera to its line-up, replacing the original A7. Introduced in November 2014, roughly one year after the first A7, it retains the same 24 Megapixel resolution while adding a deeper grip and improving the autofocus tracking. Most importantly, it is the first mirrorless camera from Sony to include built-in image stabilization that works with any lens you attach. Sony A7 II is expected to be released in early 2015.
The a7 II has a significantly bigger and more substantial body than the original a7-series cameras, and it is approximately 25% heavier. It is also now composed completely of magnesium alloy, similar to the a7S, whereas the original a7 and a7R had a front plate made of composite material in their earlier versions.
The A7 II is equipped with the same hybrid autofocus mechanism as the A7, which features 117 phase-detect and 25 contrast-detection points. Sony states that its autofocus has been enhanced by around 30% over its predecessor as a result of algorithm modifications and that tracking has been increased by 1.5x.
