The Sony RX100 VII is the company’s newest pocketable 1″ sensor small camera, and it is available now. It is equipped with the same 24-200mm equivalent F2.8-4.5 lens as its predecessor, but it has a more competent and easier-to-use autofocus technology than that of the predecessor.
Added to the already outstanding capabilities of the Mark VI, which include very rapid continuous shooting and high-quality 4K video recording, this is a significant improvement. Additionally, the Mark VII includes a microphone connector for the first time in the series, allowing for greater audio recording.
When shooting at up to 20 frames per second with no viewfinder blackout, the Mark VII achieves performance that is comparable to that of the company’s flagship a9 sports camera. And it is this feature, together with the improved autofocus, that has prompted Sony to refer to the a9 as having ‘the power of an a9 in your pocket.’ To be clear, though, it does not share any of its hardware with the model in question.
It is fair to say that the Sony RX100-series is a collection of excellent compact cameras, with the RX100 VII being possibly the greatest of them all. However, it is too pricey for a camera with a 1-inch type sensor, and it may benefit from some sort of front-facing grip. Looking past those flaws, it offers a terrific focusing mechanism, excellent video credentials, and is a convenient pocketable size for traveling.
