A beautiful mirrorless camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 checks several of the boxes that many enthusiasts are searching for. The latest 20MP sensor, top-notch Depth from Defocus AF device, and creative Dual IS system is impressive. The touchscreen and Wi-Fi characteristics of the camera are both well-implemented, and its weather-sealed body is powerful.
Articulating EVF, 4K video (save for the theoretically now obsolete Samsung NX500 and NX1, and the newly revealed Sony a6300), and practical 4K Picture and Post Focus capabilities are what distinguishes the Lumix GX8 from its rivals, both mirrorless, and DSLR. And although the Micro Four Thirds sensor of the Panasonic Lumix GX8 does not cope with high-sensitivity APS-C sensors, it retains its own and should satisfy most photographers’ needs.
The GX8 should certainly be high on your list if you want a camera to accommodate street photography and 4K video capture with aplomb. Before making their orders, though, prospective customers still need to take two crucial items into account. Also, photographers may have to consider if their future trade-offs are worth choosing to use the electronic shutter to prevent blur. In contrast, videographers who choose to attach an external mic or HDMI cord can not appreciate missing the versatility of the spinning rear screen of the camera.

A broad dose of multiple forms of glass offers much of the optical complexity: four aspherical components, two ultra-extra dispersion elements, and one UHR element. In other terms, in this prism, half the glass is unique glass. The Leica Summilux DG 25mm f1.4 from Panasonic is a good quality regular prime lens with a 50mm effective focal length. It is Panasonic’s second Leica-branded lens for Micro Four Thirds, and Leica crafts the lenses, as the 45mm f2.8 macro before it and Panasonic produces it in Japan. The construction efficiency and the manual focusing ring are of a high level and provide outstanding output outcomes.
The f1.4 focal ratio helps you to operate in low light and deliver a shallow field depth that can be ideal for close-range portraits; yes, I personally find it simpler than longer versions to photograph portraits of children with this lens. Overall, if you want the 50mm coverage and one of my personal favorites, a valuable step-up from the 20mm f1.7, while some owners of Olympus bodies have recorded intermittent rattling during composition as the aperture is changed. Notice that for Micro Four Thirds, there is now a range of 25mm alternatives, but I continue to be attracted to the rendering of this oldie but goodie.

The Lumix G 42.5mm f1.7 from Panasonic is a small telephoto prime lens that goes up against the immensely famous Olympus 45mm f1.8. The Lumix was sharper at wide apertures in the corners in my experiments and could usefully concentrate far tighter, enabling it to do double-duty as a simple macro lens; it also offers optical stabilisation for owners of unstabilized Panasonic bodies.
However, though it outperformed the Olympus in all of my measurements, the Olympus offered a marginally superior out-of-focus field rendering and is usually marketed at a higher discount. However, both are excellent and highly recommended options.

The owners of Micro Four Thirds cameras have three ultra large zooms to pick from and I think it’s worth recommending them both. I’ll launch with the Lumix G 7-14mm from Panasonic. This is a very classy shooter with an equal length of 14-28mm and a steady aperture of f4, which produces impressive performance across the picture except at the full aperture.
It includes an integrated lens hood that does a fine job of shielding the bulbous front portion from knocks, scratches and stray light. There is no way to fit filters without a DIY bracket on the downside, and when shooting bright lights, owners of Olympus bodies can suffer from purple flare. But it remains a common option and a particular preference, varying from the less severe Olympus 9-18mm to the higher-end Olympus 7-14mm f2.8.

For Micro Four Thirds shooters, the Leica DG 10-25mm f1.7 is a rare and versatile lens and a wish come true for those who take video images. The 20-50mm comparable range is not repeated anywhere, bringing you from very large to normal coverage and rendering it a walkaround lens that is remarkably flexible. The minimal focusing distance allows it possible to take valuable close-ups, but it is the steady f1.7 focal ratio that makes it really unique – yes, the appealing rendering and crisp results imply that a bunch of primes in your pocket might easily be substituted. For video shooters who also enjoy the clickless aperture ring (at least on Lumix G bodies) and linear manual focusing, the range and aperture are fine.

For Panasonic and Olympus bodies, the Leica Summilux 15mm f1.7 is a good quality general-purpose prime lens, and one that is also moderately priced relative to alternative alternatives. Its focal length might be unusual in the range, equal to 30mm in full-frame terms, but it is best equipped as a lightweight walk-around lens. For conventional portraits, a little large, yet scenery, architecture, even informative shots with a shallow depth of field are all easily within its reach, and the optical consistency is a step-up from equivalent focal length alternatives. If you do not already own either of the identical focal length primes, if you can bear the premium over the Olympus 17mm f1.8, I would suggest opt with the Summilux 15mm.

One of the lenses that really separates the Micro Four Thirds device from all other schemes is the Panasonic 35-100 mm f/2.8 II Power OIS Lumix GX Vario. With this weight, this range, this brightness and then also this efficiency, there is no telephoto lens possible for any APS-C scheme. This is the lens you need if you want a good telephoto range, high quality and sturdy design, but without having to bring a big heavy backpack. The optical design is so strong that for the second edition, Panasonic made no improvements to the lens.

A high-end super-telephoto zoom for the Micro Four Thirds system is the Leica DG 100-400mm f4-6.3. It has an equal length of 200-800 mm, installed on an Olympus or Panasonic Lumix, granting it a longer scope than any other native lens in the portfolio and making it suitable for wildlife and sports shooters. It also provides an optical and design efficiency step-up from the current telephoto zooms in the device, but at a comfortably higher price as well.
With the aperture wide-open, the Leica 100-400mm can be used effectively in terms of optical efficiency, catching sharp information throughout much of the picture. It performs better at the shorter end of the lens, as most telephoto zooms, but even at 400mm, I was quite pleased with the consistency. The Leica 100-400mm typically caught crisper details and better contrast across the spectrum as paired side-by-side with the Lumix 100-300mm while still going deeper, of course.

The Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm f/4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. is a fine super telephoto zoom lens, but not outstanding. In reality, the resolution delivered is very good across the image field and the focal length. Despite the extra low dispersion glass, the lens suffers from a high degree of lateral CAs, which is mostly a concern for Olympus consumers, although auto-correction will cope with this problem on Panasonic cameras.
Distortions are well regulated and most use-cases are not applicable. Sadly, this does not refer to the lens vignetting output that is apparent at full open aperture in the zoom range. However from f/8 onwards, it’s not really a concern anymore. The optical image stabilizer on micro-four-thirds cameras is essentially a prerequisite for hand-held shooting at such a focal length. From what we have observed during actual use a successful benefit of around “2-3 f-stops” seems possible.

It also provides low-light capacity, backed by a stabilization device of Power O.I.S that has been designed to compensate for the broader changes that are likely to occur during longer exposures. The lens features a complex architecture of the 14 element/11 category which contains a nano-scale coating to minimize ghosting and flare.

Excellent picture quality in a box that is lightweight, light and quick. In comparison to other camera systems, that’s the pledge of the Micro Four Thirds norm, and the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens is the true representation of those qualities. Connect an inexpensive set of qualifications to such an outstanding list and it is no wonder that this is one of the most common lenses in the entire catalog of Micro Four Thirds.
A very rare lens is the Olympus 45mm lens. In an amazingly compact and lightbox, it packs great output and outstanding picture quality, and it manages to do so at one of the most reasonable price points in the entire Micro Four-thirds catalog.
16. Sigma 60mm F2.8 DN

The Sigma AF 60mm f/2.8 DN can be an unambitious style, but because of the reasonably slow max, this is not a bad thing. The aperture (for a tele-prime lens) minimizes optical barriers. The lens is therefore capable of producing ultra-sharp results – at least in the middle of the shot. At f/2.8, the outer picture area is quite decent and also exceptional at f/5.6. The lateral CAs are well regulated, which adds to the sense of high sharpness. Typically, distortions are little to think about though vignetting at a completely open aperture is a touch big. In intense comparison cases, you can even find a little bit of purple fringing here. The bokeh is normally reasonably fine, but the onion-like substructure can be seen by the out-of-focus highlight disks.

The lens has 14 components, including 2 ED and 3 aspherical, and has the image stabilization system of Panasonic’s “Control OIS.” The 14-140 II has a seven-blade aperture, a minimum focus distance of 0.3m (11.8″), and a 35mm-equivalent magnification of 0.5x.
The 10x zoom lens for the Micro, Four-Thirds device is the Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. The 14-140mm lens is small and lightweight for a telephoto optic, offering a 28-280mm focal length in 35mm words. Tamron has a lot of expertise in the manufacture of superzoom lenses and a clear illustration of the type is the 14-150mm f/3.5-5.8 Di III. It’s lightweight, beautifully built and well-focused. It’s more of a balance, as normal for this sort of optic, with perfectly good picture quality in broader environments, but somewhat less adequate performance in the long end. Combined with its sluggish maximum telephoto aperture, this suggests that if you plan a ton of sports or animals to target distant objects, maybe a telezoom will be a safer option.

For Micro Four Thirds sensors, the Lumix G Vario HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 OIS is an image-stabilized super-zoom. With a near-silent stepper motor for autofocus and steady aperture control, the ‘HD’ badge denotes that it is designed for recording. Although picture quality is at its highest in the center of the zoom range, a broad variety of shooting conditions are suited to its versatility.
The addition of optical stabilization will also be an asset if you own a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera body that does not include in-body stabilization, especially when using lenses at telephoto focal lengths.
