Hasselblad H6D-400c MS Review

The bar for the picture quality that can be taken with a medium format system has been increased by Hasselblad once again, building on their enormous expertise in the development of excellent, high-quality single and multi-shot cameras.

When it comes to documenting paintings, sculptures, and other forms of artwork, multi-shot capture has emerged as a de facto industry standard in art reproduction and cultural heritage.

Because it is the only professional medium format system that incorporates multi-shot technology, Hasselblad remains the top option for institutions, organizations, and museums all over the globe to document historical artifacts with the finest picture quality possible.

With more than ten years of experience in digital photography, the newest Multi-Shot digital camera combines the H6D’s unparalleled simplicity of use with an entirely new level of image clarity and detail. This new camera incorporates all of the technological features of Hasselblad’s H6D single-shot camera. In addition, it adds the leaps in resolution and color accuracy that can only be brought to picture capture by multi-shot photography.

With an effective resolution of 400MP via 6-shot image capture or 100MP resolution in either four shot Multi-Shot capture or single-shot mode, the Multi-Shot capture mode requires the sensor and its mount to be moved at a high-precision of either one or one-half of a pixel at a time by a piezo unit. This allows the Multi-Shot capture mode to achieve an effective resolution of 400MP. The camera has to be connected to a personal computer or a macintosh computer to take Multi-Shot pictures.

In 400MP Multi-Shot mode, a total of six photographs are taken. The first four require shifting the sensor by one pixel at a time to get actual color data (GRGB; see illustrations of the first four shots below). This cycle then restores the sensor to its initial position. After then, two further exposures are taken while the sensor is moved by a half pixel in either the horizontal or the vertical direction (see 6-shot diagram on next page).

After that, these six shots are combined to create the equivalent of a single 400MP image, which is then provided as a 2.3GB 16-bit TIFF (23200 x 17400 pixels). This image is intended for those looking for the highest possible image quality and resolving power.

The H6D-400c MS incorporates all of the characteristics and capabilities of the conventional single-shot cameras produced by Hasselblad, including the following:

  • Connection via USB 3.0 type-c for tethered photography, high-speed data transfers, and live view at 30 frames per second
  • Dual media card ports, including a CFast 2.0 slot and an SD card slot 3.0-inch touch display on the back
  • The user interface resembles that of a smartphone.
  • HD & UHD video
  • A system that is modular and has an enhanced back removal procedure
  • Connectivity issues specific to the camera (single shot)
  • Wi-Fi HDMI & Audio I/O
  • True Focus II
  • With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of € 39,999 / $ 47,995 / GBP 36,250 / RMB 319,999 / JPY 5,391,380 (without VAT), the H6D-400c MS will begin arriving in March of 2018.
  • On January 16th, we will begin taking pre-orders for the next release.

Rental options for the Hasselblad H6D-400c MS will be made available through your neighborhood Hasselblad sales agent. When renting for a shorter amount of time, the rental rate is around €399 per day; however, if you rent for a more extended period, you may save up to 50% of that cost.

Hasselblad H6D-400c MS Sensor

The H6D-400c MS can capture an extensive dynamic range of up to 15 stops along with rich 16-bit color depth because of its big 100MP CMOS sensor, which measures 53.4 x 40.0mm. Additionally, the H6D-400c MS has a resolution of 53.4 x 40.0mm. Even in areas with a lot of shadows and brightness, tonal transitions and skin tones exhibit incredible depth, complexity, and clarity when paired with the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution. This results in incredibly lifelike image quality. A sensitivity range of ISO 64-12800 is provided, and the Hasselblad 3FR, raw file format, is utilized to store still images. These features allow the camera to be used in various lighting settings.

Hasselblad H6D-400c MS Electronic System

The camera system benefits from a more advanced electronic processing architecture, which enables it to deliver faster performance across the board and provides more flexible communication choices. This platform also speeds up the processing of enormous image sizes and allows video recording in both Ultra High Definition and Full High Definition.

Hasselblad H6D-400c MS Video

The H6D can record video in both Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K and Full High Definition (FHD) 1080p at 30 frames per second. In addition, the video may be stored in Hasselblad’s proprietary Raw format, which, with the help of the Phocus 3.0 editing software, can be converted to Apple’s more user-friendly ProRes format. Full HD video may also be stored in a compressed format called H.264, which offers greater editing freedom and can be used with a broader range of editing tools.
