The PowerShot SX740 HS is a digital camera with a long zoom lens of 40 times. The lens has a comparable focal range of 24-960 mm and is coupled with a camera BSI CMOS of 20.3MP and a processor DIGIC 8 of Canon. There is a 3″ LCD that enables self-portraits to flip upwards of 180 degrees, a useful zoom formation assist mode, 4 K/30 p video and time-lapse, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi access.

Canon Powershot SX740 HS: Features

The PowerShot SX740 HS succeeds the SX730 HS with 4K video capture an updated Digic 8 image sensor being the only major improvements. All else, even a 40x zoom lens, stays the same which provides a very powerful focal length of 24–960mm (in 35mm camera terms). 5-axis optic image stabilization is included which is important when aiming at such long focal distances in order to hold sharp images.

With its sensitivity range at ISO 3 200, Canon has a 20.3-megapixel sensor that is being moved from the SX730 HS and is now displaying its age. Raw, which is a shame of a camera that costs as much as the entry-level DSLR body and has manual and innovative shooting modes, is still incapable of shooting images.

At least a 4K video recorder with 30/25 fps and continuous stills recording with 10 fps is possible with the latest Digic 8 picture processor. Wireless internet connection and Bluetooth networking ensure you can upload your pictures wirelessly from your phone and GPS may even use the Canon Camera Link Software to mark your pictures.

Canon Powershot SX740 HS: Build and Handling

The SX740 HS has a fine construction efficiency. The body is mostly plastic, and after SX720 HS in 2016 its construction has not really improved. It doesn’t sound like a really high-end commodity, but it’s not weak or nasty. The front and back have big sticky plates, and the camera feels relaxed and stable in your palm – refreshingly so if you are more used to a slippery smartphone.

Whilst the SX740 HS is primarily a point-and-shoot easy-to-use camera, Canon has a dedicated mode dial to allow immediate access to the priority openness modes and to the shutter modes, as well as a completely manually built mode. Special effects such as gentle focusing and skin-soothing to boost portrait shots and pleasant effects including distortion of the fish-eye and a toy camera filter can also be chosen through the dial mode.
The LCD panel of 3 inches and 922 inches is fantastic and detailed. It is possible for quick shooting to flip up and forward. It does not touch-sensitive however, so you cannot touch a focus point, and you would be forced to scroll photos using actual buttons in the rear panel.

The SX740 HS lacks an optical viewer, unlike the Nikon Coolpix A1000 and Panasonic Lumix TZ95/ZS80, as well. It is difficult because the main display can be hard to see on very bright days, but it also ensures that the camera can also be much lower. Moreover, the EVF’s on rival compact cameras are far from the top end mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras – the compact EVF camera is very limited in dimension, at about 1 1⁄2 inch, and it is therefore not very convenient to use, particularly when you wear lenses and therefore your eye is placed a little further behind.

Canon Powershot SX740 HS: Performance

Shooting with the SX740 HS doesn’t have unexpected surprises. It can be easily triggered and centered in most lighting conditions. The exposure calculations are usually right and strike a fair compromise between the protection of highlight and shadow detail. Nevertheless, the total dynamic range is small.

Between the shutter button and a picture in Auto mode, there is a mildly annoying pause. In our research, we used a quick SD card, so this was not meant to be the issue. It constantly left us asking whether each shot was taken in time.

The images are well saturated and clear to display. In longer zoom environments, it is evident that substantial image processing takes place behind scenes to hold a sharp picture to make up for camera shake. Production of the picture is appropriate when zoomed in but shots are considerably softer.
With low lighting, the shortcomings of the tiny 1/2.3-inch sensor within SX740 HS become apparent, because in the presence of growing image noise the camera fails to retain the fine detail. The ISO 3200’s high sensitivity is limited compared to the existing requirements (for context a Huawei P30 Pro camera telephone is up to ISO 409.600!), but the optical image stabilization of the Cannon helps compensate and iron the camera.

Think again if you want to buy an SX740 HS from a contemporary smartphone to improve the picture quality. Whereas the Canon’s benefits – ergonomic, immense zoom, etc – and a good picture might click, you don’t have the new image processing available on a strong smartphone. Images, therefore, miss the very fine detail and overall wow factor well-stocked telephone cameras can deliver with good HDR processing.

Canon Powershot SX740 HS: Conclusion

Even though we’d like to see an optical viewfinder, touch screen, and Raw choices, the Canon SX740 HS is designed to satisfy the requirements of most people for a lightweight superzoom sensor. Essentially, the wide focus of the lens opens up a whole new universe for those who are constrained by the more limited zooms of other devices.

This is a nice little camera considering any of my critiques. You are ready for every shooting possibility with its extreme lens. And because that’s so compact, because you have left your camera at home, you won’t lose any chances.
