Leica M-P (Typ 240) Review

The black Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera combines a full-frame image sensor with the quality and tradition upon which Leica’s reputation was built. This camera features a minimalist design that is lauded for its image quality, and it also features aspects of minimalist design.

Rich image quality is achieved by the M-P thanks to its MAX 24MP CMOS sensor and Maestro image processing. This results in low noise levels and smooth color and tone gradations across the image.

When combined, the sensor and CPU enable the camera to achieve maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400, record full-high-definition 1080p video and continue shooting at 3 frames per second for up to 24 consecutive images.

This camera is one of a kind among digital cameras because it adheres to Leica’s preference for a rangefinder design and incorporates a 0.68x optical viewfinder with split and superimposed manual focusing, automatic parallax correction, and manual image field selection. Additionally, the camera has automatic parallax correction.

On the other hand, the camera has a sapphire glass covering for the 3.0 inch, 920k-dot LCD screen, which helps to retain the overall longevity of the magnesium alloy and brass body.

Because it is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, the M-P has no front-facing Leica insignia; instead, it has an engraved Leica script on the top plate of the camera. This is another way that the M-P sets itself apart.

The M-P, much like previous models in the M-series, can make use of the extensive network of lenses designed for the M-mount and, with the addition of an optional adapter, can also function with lenses designed for the Leica R-mount.

When working in live view, and because the focusing action is manual, focus peaking and a 10x live view zoom are useful tools for ensuring that critical focus is achieved. During shooting, you will easily access all the essential camera controls thanks to the camera’s ergonomic body design. These controls include the top-mounted dials for the shutter speed and drive mode, as well as the rear menu navigation buttons and selection dial that is located atop the thumb rest.

Rubber seals were strategically placed throughout the design of the tough metal body to ensure that the M-P would remain dust- and weather-resistant even after prolonged usage in challenging environments.

The customary red dot and front-facing ‘M’ writing has been replaced with an engraved Leica script on the brass top plate, giving the M-P a more conventional and understated appearance. The M-P also has a minimalistic design that is inconspicuous in appearance.

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Sensor

This camera, which features a full-frame Leica MAX 24MP CMOS sensor, can shoot high-resolution still pictures as well as full HD video with considerable improvements in image quality and significantly reduced levels of noise. When used with the Maestro image processor, the camera has a sensitivity range of 200-6400 ISO, which may be increased to 100 ISO so that it can be used in environments with more available light.

This image processor also enables better overall performance. It collaborates with a 2 GB picture buffer to provide longer continuous shooting sequences of 3 frames per second for up to 24 frames in a row.

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Optical Viewfinder

At a focusing distance of 6.6 feet, the optical viewfinder is a big, bright-line 0.68x-magnification rangefinder with automated parallax adjustment and LED-illuminated frame lines. These features are designed to match the size of the image sensor.

A viewfinder frame selector is located on the front of the camera and may be used to modify the apparent picture field manually. This can assist the user in seeing the scene with different focal lengths.

To facilitate precise manual focusing adjustment, the rangefinder system presents split or stacked bright field pictures within the viewfinder’s central portion. The rangefinder’s effective metering base is 47.1 millimeters (mechanical metering basis 69.25 mm x viewfinder magnification of 0.68x).

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Screen

A 3.0″ 920k-dot LCD serves as a complement to the optical viewfinder and enables live view monitoring. This monitor also provides the capability to use focus peaking and 10x zoom functions, which help guarantee that vital sharpness is achieved.

Focus peaking reveals bright edges of contrast in red, green, or blue hues when they are in great focus, and the zoom control helps you zoom in on minute details within the image. Focus peaking also emphasizes brilliant edges of contrast when they are out of focus.

This monitor has been outfitted with a scratch-resistant protective cover manufactured from sapphire crystal glass to provide an additional layer of protection and durability. In addition, anti-reflective coatings are applied to both sides of the covering glass so that it is easier to see in environments where there is a lot of ambient light.

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Video

It is possible to capture video at a resolution of full high definition 1080p at either 24 or 25 frames per second. HD 720p recording is also offered, in addition to VGA 480p recording at 30 frames per second. The body’s design includes a monaural microphone with a manual audio volume control that may be used when recording.

Leica M-P (Typ 240) Body Design

The M-P has a metal body design reminiscent of historic Leica designs. The chassis of the M-P is made of magnesium alloy, while the top plate is made of brass. The body is wrapped in synthetic leather for added flair. Rubber seals are installed all around the body to protect it from dust and to enable it to be used under adverse weather conditions.

In addition, the streamlined and ergonomic design enables quick access to the essential camera functions, such as the dials for the top shutter speed and drive mode, as well as the buttons for navigating the menu on the rear of the camera.
