The Best action camera in 2023: simple and Easy to Use for Life’s Adventures

The most significant action camera is essential for filming your extreme sports video and becoming a viral sensation. Brutal recording instruments can capture spectacular footage of your extreme sports, from surfing to flying. We’ve evaluated a wide variety of the best action cameras on the market, from entry-level to high-end, and ranked them based on our preferences.

What are the best action cameras?

In your opinion, which action camera is the most universally applicable and why? The Hero 11 Black continues GoPro’s tradition of high-quality action cameras. In addition, the sensor’s 8:7 aspect ratio allows for flexible cropping on social media. The camera’s Horizon Lock feature ensures that your 360-degree, 5K footage remains level and steady even in low light.

However, GoPro’s top-of-the-line camera is not cheap. We think the DJI Osmo Action 3 is the best value among current action cameras. It may not have the best image quality. Still, it is a capable, rugged, and less expensive alternative to the GoPro Hero 11 Black, with a larger viewing angle and excellent underwater capabilities. Want to save even more money? Also, the Akaso Brave 7 LE, a dual-screen action camera, comes highly recommended.

1. GoPro HERO 10 Black

The current flagship from GoPro isn’t a radical improvement over its before, but if you’re shopping for the most refined and powerful action cam, this is it. The new GP2 CPU is the most notable improvement to the Hero 10 Black, allowing for the addition of several practical enhancements. Some of them, like the 4K/120p video recording, are stunning, while others, like the much more responsive touchscreen, feel like solutions to problems with the Hero 9 Black.

2. AKASO Brave 7 LE

If you value a front-facing screen and weather-sealing more than absolute video quality, then the Brave 7 LE should be at the top of your choice. The audio quality of this device is superior to that of any non-GoPro model we’ve tested (at least in calmer areas), and its touchscreen interface is straightforward to use.

3. Insta360 One R

The Insta360 One R, a modular camera, now has a 1-inch sensor, making it a formidable competitor to GoPro’s Hero series. According to our testing, this results in low-light capabilities that are superior to those of the GoPro competition in terms of brightness, clarity, and detail, as well as a native dynamic range that surpasses any other action camera. The 5.23K/25p and 4K/60p modes provide clear and vibrant images, while the raw stills are excellent.

4. GoPro Hero 11 Black

The new flagship camera from GoPro doesn’t significantly improve picture quality. Nonetheless, the Hero 11 Black is GoPro’s most versatile action camera due to its new 1/1.9 sensor. In addition, its 8:9 aspect ratio makes it simple to export high-quality material in formats optimized for various social media platforms.

With the newer sensor, you may use the ultra-wide HyperView lens and the video stabilization feature Horizon Lock. In our tests, we were particularly impressed by the camera’s ability to maintain scene levels in a full 360 degrees when shooting at 5.3K/30p with a Linear lens.

The highest video resolutions are the same as the GoPro Hero 10 Black at 5.3K/60p and 4K/120p. The new 10-bit color option gives post-production editors more leeway when grading. There has also been an increase in the maximum bit rate to 120Mbps, making it more capable of handling complex scenarios.

5. DJI Osmo Action 3

The DJI Osmo Action 3 is an excellent camera for the money, but it can’t match the GoPro Hero 11 Black in raw image quality. A sturdy instrument with long battery life and respectable video capabilities, it combines the guts of the Action 2 with the traditional action cam design of the original.

The DJI has a larger field of vision than any GoPro and is waterproof up to 16 meters, making it an excellent choice for underwater photography. However, the 3 has trouble maintaining consistent exposure across the frame because of the wide angle.

Although it can’t compete with the best in terms of detail or dynamic range, it can nonetheless capture pleasing footage in solid light. Even if the judder of the adjustment may be seen in low light, the horizon leveling is good for the price.

6. GoPro HERO9 Black

While the Hero 10 Black has since replaced it, the Hero 9 Black is still a great option if you don’t require cutting-edge capabilities like 4K/120p video or a better front screen. This model has the same sensor, design, and functionality as the Hero 10; however, the Hero 10 is worth the additional expense due to its enhanced usage.

7. GoPro HERO8 Black

The GoPro Hero 9 Black and Hero 10 Black have already replaced it, but this older model may be the better bargain if you don’t require a selfie screen. So how does it stack up against the most recent versions from GoPro? These two successors also have enhanced slow-motion settings and 5K video recording capabilities.

Suppose you can live without any of those features. In that case, the Hero 8 Black will provide you with almost equivalent 4K video recording, nearly identical HyperSmooth stabilization (outside of the most demanding modes), and one less color screen to worry about breaking.

8. DJI Action 2

Compared to GoPro’s action cameras, the DJI Action 2 is an excellent modular option, and it may be the superior selection if you can live with its restrictions.

You may purchase the Action 2 with any of the two expansion packs. It is a little metal cube (either a standard battery or a battery with a second screen for vlogging). The magnetic attachment system was very convenient, requiring far less fiddling than GoPro mounts. If you enjoy technology, you will enjoy this.

9. GoPro HERO7 Black

As of today, the Hero 8 Black is GoPro’s base model, while the Hero 7 Black has been discontinued. However, if you need a more affordable action camera with GoPro’s superb HyperSmooth stabilization, the Hero 7 Black is still available in large quantities and at a reasonable price.

While the Hero 7 Black can record 4K video, it does not include a high bit-rate 100Mbps mode or a ‘Linear’ shooting mode, eliminating the fisheye distortion in broader shooting modes.

10. insta360 ONE R

The Insta360 One R is an actual modular action camera consisting of a battery, control, and camera block, whereas the GoPro Hero 9 Black offers valuable add-ons. This gives you the flexibility to swap the latter at whim, whether you’re using it as a 4K action cam or a 360-degree camera, depending on the shot you’re trying to get.

A 1-inch sensor cube is included (see the Insta360 One R 1-Inch Edition at number 2). So does this entry-level model live up to its billing as three cameras in one? The answer is “yes” in many respects: when attached, the One R is barely more significant than the Hero 8 Black and has a satisfyingly solid feel; however, you’ll need to use the included mounting cover if you want to keep it dry underwater. Furthermore, the image quality is clear and consistent, with fine detail even in the darkest regions.

11. GoPro MAX

The GoPro Hero 8 Black and Hero 9 Black are still the best options if you care about shooting stock action camera footage (not 360 videos) at the highest possible quality. But if you’re interested in post-shoot video framing and high-quality sound, the Max is a strong contender.

The most costly GoPro action camera has two fisheye lenses that capture spherical 5.6K footage that can be cropped into a conventional 2D video using the company’s proprietary OverCapture software. Built-in mounting fingers mean you won’t need an additional attachment mount to attach it to anything. Its six microphones record superb audio (though not quite to the level of GoPro’s’shotgun mic’ boasts).

12. DJI Pocket 2

If you’re a solitary trip filmmaker or vlogger and don’t want to lug about a bulky action camera, the DJI Pocket 2 is a great option. When used in conjunction with the Pocket 2’s face-tracking functionality, the camera will automatically pan left and right as you move in front of it, thanks to its integrated three-axis gimbal.

When selecting the best action camera, consider the following factors:

  1. Video quality: Look for a camera that can shoot in high resolution and at a high frame rate for smooth, detailed footage.
  2. Durability: Ensure the camera is waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof to withstand extreme environments.
  3. Battery life: Consider how long the camera’s battery will last and whether or not it is easily replaceable.
  4. Connectivity: Look for a camera with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities for easy sharing and remote control.
  5. Features: Some cameras have additional features like voice control, image stabilization, and slow-motion capabilities. Decide which elements are essential to you.
  6. Brand and Price: Research the brand and price of the camera to ensure that you’re getting the best value for your money. Look for customer reviews and ratings and compare the prices.
  7. Size and weight: If you’re planning on using the camera in various settings, look for a camera that is small, lightweight, and easy to carry around.
  8. Accessories: Check for the availability of accessories like additional batteries, mounting options, and cases that can enhance the camera’s functionality.
  9. Compatibility: Check if the camera can easily connect to other devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets.

Ultimately, the best action camera for you will depend on your specific needs and how you plan to use it.
