Most Likely, Nikon Is Done Making New DSLRs

Most people don’t think it’s a big surprise that Nikon will likely stop making DSLR cameras. They will instead concentrate on their mirrorless cameras.
Nikkei Asia says that Nikon will stop making new DSLR cameras and focus only on its mirrorless cameras. Early in 2020, the D6 was the company’s last DSLR. It mostly made the D5 better, which was a sign that the company was about to stop making DSLRs.

Nikkei says that the fact that smartphone cameras are a strong competitor played a role in Nikon’s decision. The company decided to focus on making cameras that are different from phones in ways that make them stand out. Still, for the time being, the company plans to keep making and selling DSLRs, and it’s not clear when it will stop. In response, Nikon made the following statement:

“There was a media article regarding Nikon’s withdrawal of SLR development. This media article is only speculation and Nikon has made no announcement in this regard. Nikon is continuing the production, sales, and service of digital SLR. Nikon appreciates your continuous support.”

The statement doesn’t contradict Nikkei’s article, which only said that DSLRs were no longer being made and not being improved. Nikon hasn’t confirmed this, but I find it hard to believe that they are putting a lot of effort into making new DSLRs right now.

I think Canon is in the same place. Most likely, in the next few years, only Pentax will make new DSLRs.
