Now, you can use a Leica to watch TV

If you like Leica and like to watch movies and TV shows with the best image quality possible, you will like this.
Leica just announced the Cine 1, a projector for home theatres with an ultra-short throw.

Ultra-short-throw projectors are made to be easy to use. They don’t need to be mounted on the ceiling, which saves space, and they can project a large image (80 or 100 inches) upward from just a few inches away.

It makes sense for an optical company to make a projector like this. Because ultra-short-throw projectors have to make large, clear images from a short distance, they need a lot of optical know-how. A company like Leica is a good choice because it has a lot of optical know-how.

Even though there aren’t many official details yet, The Verge talked to Leica and found out that there will be two models. Both will be able to do 4K at 60 Hz, but one will project a 100-inch image at 2,500 lumens from 12 inches away and cost $7,900, while the other will project an 80-inch image at 2,100 lumens from 6 inches away and cost $6,900.

Both projectors use a triple RGB laser light engine, a DLP chip from Texas Instruments, and a 30-millisecond latency.

In terms of connectivity, you can expect three HDMI ports (one HDMI 2.1 with eARC), a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, and an integrated tuner with a DVB-CI slot. You can also look forward to the Dolby Atmos sound.

Photography fans will be most interested in the Summicron projection lens, which has aspherical elements and is built to Leica’s high engineering standards. We don’t know much about the projector’s visuals, such as whether or not it supports HDR, but we hope to learn more soon.

Leica says

The Cine 1 will be available in the second quarter of 2023.
