Hasselblad 907X 50C Review

Both of these astounding feats are accomplished with the Hasselblad 907X 50C. First, it resurrects the classic Hasselblad 500 film camera range at a price that makes bringing these cameras out of retirement a feasible proposition, especially considering that many of them are still working. Additionally, it provides an affordable entry point into Hasselblad’s modular medium format system.

The modular medium-format cameras produced by Hasselblad are currently available in two distinct varieties. First, you are using the most recent model in the Hasselblad ‘H’ line of digital single-lens reflex cameras, which is the large, cumbersome, and pricey H6.

After deducting a few millimeters from the film area, the sensor on this digital back has a resolution of 100 megapixels, which is about equivalent to the size of the traditional medium format 645 (6×4.5 cm) film. This digital media format is referred to as “full frame.” The cost of the body solely for the H6D-100c is around $33,000.

Hasselblad 907X 50C Features

As was mentioned earlier, the 907X is comprised of two separate components. You might argue that the 907X is the “body” of the camera, but in reality, it’s more like a glorified lens adapter that acts as a physical link between the lenses and the detachable CFV II 50C back. You could also say that the 907X is the “back” of the camera. It is only 200 grams in weight. However, it does come equipped with a tripod socket.

It will be fascinating to observe how Hasselblad expands this product range and the presence or absence of new backs in the years to come. Interchangeability currently mainly advantages the Hasselblad 500 (V-series) film cameras. (The package also comes with a focusing screen mask, which illustrates the different sensor sizes of the CFV II 50C when it is used in conjunction with a Hasselblad 500.)

Hasselblad 907X 50C Build Quality

First things first, let’s address the glaringly obvious issues. Although the 907X 50C may be used in portable mode, this mode is not where it excels. It’s not hard to get a good grip on it, but if it lacked a traditional grip, you probably wouldn’t want to go around with it in one hand unless there was a strap for added security.

The button that triggers the shutter is located on the front of the camera, directly below and to the right of the lens. It may seem strange, but considering the camera’s form, it’s in a beautiful location and in the same spot as the original ‘V’ cameras from Hasselblad’s 500 series.

While the design is suitable for handheld shooting, a few more factors work against it. The swiveling back screen has exceptional sharpness and clarity inside, but it is readily obscured by glare and bright light when used outside. You might consider purchasing the standalone 907X optical viewfinder as an additional accessory to your camera.

Hasselblad 907X 50C Performance

This evaluation will be updated as soon as we obtain the outcomes of the lab tests conducted on the 907X, which we have not yet finished doing in their entirety. Although we anticipate a highly comparable performance to the Hasselblad X1D 50C, we want to be specific given the rapid pace at which technology advances.

Our observations up to this point are founded on the results of our field testing, during which we captured both JPEGs and raw files and inspected the raws using Adobe Camera Raw as well as Hasselblad’s very own Phocus software.

Since we’ve previously covered the autofocus performance, there’s little need to go over it again. It is not quick, and it is not quite, but thanks to the touchscreen AF point selection, you can pick an AF point pretty much any place. Unfortunately, neither of these things is true.

This also works with the Phocus Mobile app, which, when you initially connect it, needs you to go through the standard Wi-Fi registration process, but after that, it functions well. You can use a phone, but it works much better on an iPad Pro. The iPad Pro experience is similar to shooting when tethered, and you have much control over the camera settings.

Hasselblad 907X 50C Image Quality

The digital medium format sensor and the processor found in the Hasselblad 907X 50C are identical to those found in the X1D II 50C. You have a resolution of 4:3 and 51.2 megapixels, with each pixel measuring 5.3 x 5.3 micrometers. The dimension of the sensor is 43.8 by 32.9 millimeters, which results in a focal length multiplier of 0.79. (crop factor compared to full-frame).

The 907X 50C and the X1D II 50C are identical in every respect, except whatever influence the handling of the camera may have on the image quality in a roundabout way.

Both cameras are immediately compatible with the XCD lenses offered by Hasselblad, of which there are presently 10 in the range. We have been doing an in-depth analysis of these lenses, and it is sufficient to state that each lens possesses outstanding performance in terms of picture quality, with considerable optical advancements compared to the V-series lenses.

If you are coming to the 907X from a “normal” camera, merely searching for something more significant and better, there are several things that you will find to be lacking in the 907X. You are not the target of this.

The Hasselblad 907X 50C is intended for use by professional, commercial, and fine art photographers who value the quality of output above all else, as well as versatility in operation and design, and are willing to take their time to achieve it. All of these benefits are provided by the 907X 50C, and they are offered at an unprecedented price point in the medium format market.
