Though drawing on the same validated 12.1-megapixel sensor and 24-600mm comparable f/2.8 lens, the Panasonic FZ300 upgrades the FZ200 in multiple ways. The revised chassis, upgraded EVF, and improved tilting display really allow the FZ300 in the field to manage well. This 4K-capable sensor, with decent imaging efficiency for its class, is up to the challenge of being a flexible multimedia camera and proves to be a fantastic performer and an even better value.

Panasonic Lumix FZ300: Body

The Panasonic FZ300 maintains its predecessor’s SLR-like styling, but the body is only a little bigger and heavier, having expanded in all dimensions by some 0.2 to 0.3 inches, and gained about 3.6 ounces (17.5 percent) of extra mass. However, there is a very good explanation for this, and it is one that will make the FZ300 a far more flexible camera than its predecessor, particularly for nature and sports shooters who have to deal with the elements. The body of the FZ300 is brand new, and it was also fully splash- and dust-proofed as well as adding some new buttons!

The 12-megapixel Panasonic FZ300 uses a 1/2.3-inch image sensor, but it is now combined with a Venus Engine image processor of the new generation. According to Panasonic, this upgrade carries with it a half-frame per second performance boost with autofocus enabled. With autofocus enabled, or as much as 12 fps with focus locked b, you should be able to extract six frames per second at maximum resolution.

Panasonic also focused on the image stabilization method of the FZ300 as well. The latest model now sports a five-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system in place of the FZ200’s dual-axis Control O.I.S. image stabilization system. Remember, however, that the five-axis device is not usable during 4K film capture or high-frame rate recording. Yeah, and if you were upset that the FZ200 did not allow access to its fastest shutter speed of 1/4,000 seconds until you stopped all the way down to f/8 or smaller, we have good news: at f/4 or smaller, the Panasonic FZ300 will now allow 1/4,000 seconds. There is also a 1/16,000-second electronic shutter feature, and in your images, the FZ300 can now automatically level horizons just as some Pentax DSLRs do.

For quite some time, Panasonic’s FZ200 remained on the market-it was an impressive performer upon its release and still an excellent option if you buy it today at a very friendly price point. The FZ300 retains a 12-megapixel image sensor and a 25-600mm f/2.8 lens, but by incorporating weather sealing, a crisper EVF, and a sharp multi-angle touch-sensitive touchscreen, it increases the build quality. Panasonic is calling for the latest model at a premium price, however, and there are other serious cameras competing for your dollar at $600. The enhancements it offers over the FZ200 are tactile, particularly the enhanced EVF and lightning-fast autofocus, but even if some of its hardware is obsolete, I would not blame anybody for preferring to purchase the older model at half the cost.

And the Canon SX60 HS is an expensive camera, too. It also has a crisp EVF, a rear vari-angle display, and supports the capturing of raw images. Its image quality is a little sharper, and even when zoomed in, its lens does not absorb as much light, it spans an ambitious spectrum of 65x (21-1,365mm). In certain ways, the FZ300 is a superior camera-the Canon does not provide 4K recording, does not concentrate as easily, and does not have weather sealing, but ultimately, I still give the SX60 a minor advantage. With findings that display a little more clarity than the FZ300, the picture quality is outstanding, and although superzooms are often lauded for telephoto scope, the 21mm wide-angle lens of the SX60 sets it apart from the crowd.
