The DSLR refuses to die: Pentax looks set to release two new DSLR lenses

In an era dominated by mirrorless cameras, where DSLR models seemed to have faded into obscurity, Pentax surprises photography enthusiasts with the launch of two new DSLR lenses. While major players like Canon and Nikon have shifted their focus to mirrorless technology, Pentax continues to cater to DSLR lovers and keeps the flame of this traditional format alive.

Reports from digicam-info and Pentaxrumors.com have shed light on Pentax’s latest offerings: the HD PENTAX-FA 50mm f/1.4 and the HD PENTAX-FA 50mm f/1.4 Classic lenses. Although specific details are scarce, both lenses appear to share the same core construction, differing mainly in barrel designs. The regular lens boasts the familiar exterior design found in most modern HD/SMC Pentax optics, featuring a distinctive green ring.

On the other hand, the ‘Classic’ variant showcases a more streamlined appearance, with a smooth focus ring and a different typeface used for its markings. At first glance, the styling might ironically appear more modern than classic, but it pays homage to the design of the SMC Pentax-FA 50mm f/1.4, a lens dating back to around 1991. Both lenses provide an aperture range of f/1.4 to f/22, a robust metal mounting plate, and a mechanical focus scale to facilitate manual and zone focusing.

According to insider rumors, both lenses are slated for release on June 9th. The standard lens is expected to retail at 54,800 yen, including tax (approximately $349.95), while the Classic version is anticipated to have a price tag of 59,800 yen.

Pentax’s decision to introduce these new DSLR lenses demonstrates its commitment to serving the niche market of photographers who still prefer the versatility and familiarity of DSLR cameras. As the industry continues to evolve, Pentax’s dedication to this classic format gives enthusiasts a reason to celebrate and reaffirms their position as a reliable brand for traditional photography needs.
