If you needed something this big for your Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6, as the best Canon RF lenses previously capped out at 14mm, you were out of luck until now. The Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL, however, now ensures that without having to change cumbersome DSLR lenses, you can film natively large on your RF camera.
At just 63.5mm long and a paltry 254g, this rectilinear lens is ludicrously compact and compact, making it a pocket-sized prime that you will still find room to take with you, making it great for casual landscapes and travel photography.
Its minimum focusing distance of 0.19 m combined with a viewing angle of 126 ° allows you to get some extremely special world views, like very cool 10-point sunstars because of the 5 aperture blades. It also features a 62mm filter thread, making it simple to shoot and achieve a multitude of results in a number of outdoor environments.

We have previously tested this lens, already available in Sony FE, Nikon Z, Leica M and L mount, and although pleased with its scale and center sharpness, we found that its overall performance falls uncharacteristically short of the normal expectations of Laowa.
“There are compromises to achieve the super-small form factor: the f/4.5 aperture means that you’ll need to consider your exposure, while corner sharpness, vignetting, fringing and distortion are all issues – albeit issues that, aside from sharpness, can easily be fixed in editing,”
“Of course, larger (and pricier) lenses may not suffer said flaws – but since they are larger and heavier, you’ll find yourself leaving them at home most of the time. Would you rather have a flaw-free lens that you seldom bring with you, or a lens with some mostly forgivable flaws that always fits in your camera bag?”
Overall, however, for someone who wants to experiment with ultra-wide lenses without breaking the bank, we find this an extremely enjoyable lens to use, and a great introduction to extreme-angle photography.
The Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL is now available for Canon RF, Sony FE, Nikon Z, and L-mount at $699 / £769 and Leica M. at $799 / £869.
