The Zoom Q8n-4K Portable Video Recorder Is Out Now in Market.

The Zoom Q8n-4K is not just an audio-first video camera, but also a direct successor to the Q2n-4K, which was introduced in 2018.

Despite the fact that this new camera/audio recorder has been on the market for some time, it is just now available for purchase.

The notion of an audio-first video camera may appear strange at first, but upon closer examination, it makes perfect sense. This camera, as well as its predecessor from 2018, are ideal companions for musicians, for example.

For most of these performers, the ability to visually depict a recording session while also recording high-quality audio is critical. I don’t want to imply that the other video functions are merely “nice-to-have,” but the sound is, after all, the main focus here.

According to Zoom, the new Q8n-4K portable video recorder’s target audience includes not just musicians, but also filmmakers, podcasters, and others.

Zoom Q8n-4K

The new Zoom Q8n-4K camera records up to 4K30p UHD video (1080/720p At 60fps) in MPEG-4 AVC/h.264, as the name suggests. The focal length (and focus) of the lens employed is fixed, and the aperture is f/2.8. Although the actual focal length is unclear, the field of view is set at 150°, indicating that we’re dealing with a wide-angle lens (Zoom claims “5 fields of vision,” which I assume indicates digital zoom). A 1/2.3′′ CMOS sensor with 16MP resolution sits behind the lens.

As you can see, the video specs aren’t particularly impressive, but that’s OK (depending on your situation), because we’re dealing with a Zoom device, so let’s discuss audio!

Audio specs

The Q8n-4K, like other Zoom audio recorders, can handle professional audio signals via two XLR inputs on the camera itself (with phantom power: +12 V / +24 V / +48 V), as well as a special microphone module on the top that can be exchanged for various other microphone modules with different characteristics.

Two shotgun modules, XY/AB stereo modules, VR modules, and an XLR extension module are all available. A 120° XYQ-8 stereo module is included in the package.

WAV files up to 96 kHz/24-bit, 16-bit are used to record audio. There are other options for 48 kHz/24-bit, 16-bit and 44.1 kHz/24-bit, 16-bit. The Zoom Q8n-4K comes with the following sophisticated audio filters:

  • LoCut: Off / 80 Hz / 120 Hz / 160 Hz / 200 Hz / 240 Hz
  • Fx: Off / Limiter / Compressor / Leveler / DeEsser / NoiseGate
  • Level: −∞ dB – +10 dB
  • Pan: L100 – Center – R100
  • Delay: 0 ms, 10 ms … 300 ms (only during web camera use)
  • Direct Monitor: On/Off (only during web camera and USB mic)

To minimize space during travel, the audio modules may be folded back. A 2-inch LCD display on the rear of the Q8n-4K can be turned 180 degrees for selfies. It cannot, however, be articulated, and the 320 x 240 resolution is also lacking.

When you attend zoom(!) calls, for example, the Zoom Q8n-4K may be used to replace your laptop’s inbuilt front camera. To do so, connect the camera to your computer using a USB cable (Type C). The Q8n-4K, on the other hand, is limited to 1080p video and 48 kHz/16-bit audio.

More specs

The Zoom Q8n-4K, including the battery, weighs 367 grams and can record 1080p footage for up to 2.5 hours (around 80 mins when recording 4K). MicroSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards with a capacity of up to 512 GB are supported by the camera. The camera may also be operated remotely through an app (iOS/Android) if necessary, although this needs the BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter (available separately).

Dimensions are as follows:

  • 2.7 x 2.6 x 6.3″ / 68.0 x 65.0 x 159.0 mm Mic Arm Lowered
  • 2.7 x 5.3 x 5.3″ / 68.0 x 135.0 x 134.0 mm Mic Arm Raised

The Q8n-4K has a dual-line/headphone stereo mini port and a micro HDMI connection for video communication.

Pricing

Preorders for the Zoom Q8n-4K are currently open, and it costs $399.99. It remains to be seen whether a camera with a professional audio recorder can provide what it promises at such a low price, but this gadget might be very beneficial for streamers, artists, and possibly even filmmakers.
